Open Books, Open Doors/A Reading Aloud Program (Recipient of the VSLA Community Service Project Grant 2009) - Families, using the Roanoke Rescue Mission Women's Shelter as a temporary home, experience the joy of reading through the monthly visits of members of the Roanoke Valley Chapter. Each child receives a book. This group meets the first Tuesday of each month at the Rescue Mission Women's Shelter.
Books for Babies- On August 15, 2013, Ashleigh Fisher, a member of our chapter, gave birth to her son, Nathan Charles. Nathan came 11 weeks early and spent 7 weeks in the NICU at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Throughout those weeks in the hospital, both Ashleigh and her husband read to their son. At a recent board meeting, Ashleigh shared the emotional impact and bonding that resulted from the reading experience. As a result of her story, a community outreach project has been embraced by the Roanoke Valley Chapter. It is called Books for Babies and is in honor of Nathan Charles and his family.
Working with the NICU department of the Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Books for Babies delivers a board book to each family that is currently using the facility. Each book is tied with a cheerful bow and contains a bookmark stating that the book is a gift from the Roanoke Valley Chapter. Through the reading of the book while in the NICU, this project is a way for parents of premature babies to become involved with the emotional and cognitive development of their child. The RVRC’s financial support for funding this program will have a positive impact of the lives of approximately 750 newborns each year. Monetary donations to the project can be made by a check written to the Virginia State Literacy Association Roanoke Valley Chapter. Donations of board books can be given to any member of the reading council. For further information about how to support this project, contact Tamara Teaff (tteaffbcps@gmail.com).
